Hia, thought it would be easier to do a group update than repeat myself all day on the phone - went back to see specialist today who confirmed that the baby has an abnormal right kidney with multiple cysts, the largest 5.7mm. Good news is that the left kidney is normal and so is the bladder and fluid which is a good indication that the left is working effectively for both kidneys. Providing no cysts appear on the 'good' kidney worse case is that the baby will be born with a minimal functioning right kidney and subject to levels of infections etc may need surgery at around 12-18 mths to remove the bad kidney. Best case is that it will be born with a non-functioning kidney which will be redundant and reduce in size with no surgery required. It seems fairly obvious that the baby will grow up with just one kidney which we are told is not uncommon. They are going to scan and monitor me every four weeks to monitor the kidneys from now until birth but until the baby is born we won't have 100% knowledge of what postnatal care will be needed for the baby. Bit of a shock but we are both positive of the baby leading a healthy normal life just with one kidney. Xxx |

Lots of babies are born with one kidney. I'm sure Niall or Liam from one direction was born with one kidney. Maybe the girls can look that up on the net to give them some input? At least its other kidney is functioning fine and all major organs are good. Big hugs to all of you x |
